How-To: Send messages using your BlackBerry pin number

First things first...

What is a BlackBerry pin number?

Your BlackBerry pin number is a custom identification number that your BlackBerry was originally assigned that allows other users with your pin number to direct message you.

When I use my pin number to message other users is it free?

Yes, silly! This is why it is so great...this will be an amazing money saver over text messaging others and it's quicker than drafting an email.

So how do I send a BlackBerry pin number message and why?

You can send messages directly to a BlackBerry user's PIN rather than to the user's email address.  This is best for getting customer support directly from your service provider or contacting others when you have no direct connection aka ( no wireless or data connection).

Sending PIN messages on your BlackBerry is horribly simple to do, you just need another user's BlackBerry pin. You can only get this by asking the other user for it, this is not published anywhere (unless they do it themselves) to my knowledge.

Just follow the steps below to compose your first PIN message on your BlackBerry:

  1. Open your email composer.

  2. Compose a new message

  3. In the "To" field enter the user's pin number you wish to send a PIN message.

  4. Compose your message, and send it as usually would send an email message.

Want to find users that share their pin number and are open to convo...try the below groups!

Quick Tip: How-To Email Multiple Images with your iPhone

Multiple Images iPhone 1- SimpleLeap.com

When I bought my iPhone 3G a year ago, I noticed that I could not email more than one image at a time...this quickly became one of most annoying things to me on my iPhone. I figured if every other "dumb" and smartphone could do it, surely the 'ALMIGHTY' iPhone could to, well that wasn't the case....until now.

Since the iPhone 3.0 update my multiple image email delight has come true, well...sort of. You can now send FIVE (5) images from your iPhone with the software update and here is how...

  1. From your iPhone home screen, tap on "Photos".

  2. Tap the arrow on the bottom left of the screen.

  3. Select the photos you want to share (when you tap them it will add red check marks in the corner of each picture you want to send)

  4. Tap "Share". If share is not highlighted as an option, you've selected more than five (5) images and the iPhone will not allow you to share them, but you can delete them this way.

  5. Tap "Email".

  6. The email will now automatically attach the images and you can send your email.

That's it really! Now I'm waiting for MMS...

iPhone 3.0 OS is out, what does this mean to you?

So after all of the recent iPhone news, including news about yet another new iPhone, why you should care about any of it and what exactly should concern you?

Well, I've BRIEFLY detailed why the new iPhone OS should matter to those that don't plan on getting the new iPhone and how to update to the latest version...Let's do it!

If you are enjoying your current iPhone you are most likely running iPhone OS 2.0. Well, after all of the recent iPhone news - the new software for the iPhone has just been released.

So why does this new iPhone software matter to you?

Because you have new features and better iPhone performance silly, that's why lol! No seriously, there have been numerous updates that have really helped make the iPhone a better tool. I have listed a few of the new and most important features below:

  • Spotlight Search - basically you go to the absolute first screen on your iPhone (even before the first screen with the pre-installed iPhone apps) and you can search your entire iPhone. This feature was already included the Macs but is very helpful on the iPhone.

  • Built-in landscape keyboard

  • Messages

  • Voice Memos- will probably remove the need for any BASIC third party voice memo apps

  • and of course the infamous CUT, COPY, and PASTE

Who can take advantage of the new software?

Any iPhone or iPod user who updates. iPhone users get the update for FREE and iPod users pay a $10 update fee - http://www.apple.com/ipodtouch/softwareupdate.html (whomp whomp).

What is the difference between updating my iPhone software and buying the new iPhone 3G S?

Well your new iPhone 3G S will have:

  • Improved Performance

  • Video Icon Built-in video camera with editing

  • Voice Icon Voice Control

  • Compass Icon Compass - I can't wait to see the apps besides the new Tom Tom nav app that will utlize this tool, I personallly don't get it besides this app. Only time will tell

How do I get the new iPhone software?

Getting the newest iPhone software is almost as easy as plug and play. I have included a link on detailed software update directions here:  How-To Update your iPhone Software .

That's it for now my friends, I hope this helps!

Quick Tip: How to Take a Screenshot on the Mac

If you have just ripped open the packaging on your new Mac or simply haven't had the need to take a screenshot on your Mac yet, you may not realize there isn't a single button for this on your Mac.

Yes, it's true...this is the one of the few functions that may not be that obvious on the Mac. Although there isn't one assigned button for this on your Mac doesn't mean you can't take a screenshot. Not only do you have the ability to take a screenshot, but it's simple and we have detailed the directions below.

There are a few ways to take a screenshot (OR print the screen - so many references, so little time, lol) and we have detailed them below.

Quick-Tip: Separate your BlackBerry SMS messages from your Email

Your BlackBerry has just buzzed and you think it's an email alert. It's listed under your email messages and it's subject almost looks like an email, but...it is not. It is a SMS message and somehow it has intruded your email messages list. Ok...well, an "intrusion" is a bit of an overstatement (I must admit) but it certainly doesn't belong in your email list, right? Absolutely! So let's learn how to move those SMS messages to their proper place, shall we?

First...

  1. From your BlackBerry's main screen, open your "Messages"  application.  (The app  that has all of those precious emails listed)

  2. Click on the BlackBerry menu button and select "Options".

  3. From this menu, click on "General Options".

  4. Scroll all the way down this list until you locate "SMS and Email Inboxes".

  5. From the drop down select "Separate".

  6. Press your BlackBerry back button to save your changes and BINGO!

Your email and SMS messages are now automatically separated on the BlackBerry, instead of cluttering your email folders. This should help you keep your BlackBerry organized.

Now that wasn't so bad was it? If you have any questions, comment,  or just need additional help leave it in the comments.

Why Apple Should Reinvent SpotLight

Apple Spotlight - SimpleLeap Software

There's no doubt that launchers are a great thing: instead of moving you mouse or right-clicking, you can simply use your keyboard to perform actions.

There's Mozilla Ubiquity, this amazing extension everyone's talking about which allows you to create your own shortcuts to browse the web "faster and smarter"; there's QuickSilver, a lightweight Mac app which is very useful in order to launch applications in about 2 seconds; then, there's Apple's Spotlight.

Spotlight allows you to find anything on your Mac: from files to applications, you can just launch it via keyboard shortcut and start searching. But there's a big problem in my opinion: interface.
I mean, it's a column.

While Spotlight shows a great potential in finding stuff, it surely lacks in user interface experience, presenting its results in way-too-simple column view which should enable the users to distinguish files from directories. Sure. There are some preferences, this is true, but even if you restrict your Spotlight settings to Apps, Folders and Documents, there's still this ugly list view which is so old.

So what should Apple do to improve Spotlight? I think that together with vertical space, Spotlight should use horizontal space as well: instead of having dozens of results in a vertical display (Documents is under Applications which is under Top Hit which is under Show All) it could put Categories in a horizontal view  and then the results under each categories so that we could have a quick glimpse of all the things we have found instead of having to look at the bottom of the list.

Anyway we'll know more in a few days with WWDC. Let's hope Spotlight will be reinvented.

How-To: Change your BlackBerry Auto-Signature

Interested in changing that "Sent from BlackBerry" auto-signature to something a bit more personal. Wonderful, I will help you do this. It's a great idea when you want to let your customers know that you are away from the desk, working on their project, or maybe you just don't want people to know you are working on the move.

Let's get started...

Go to your carrier's login page — listed below — and enter your login information. If you haven't created an account yet, you'll be given that option at the login screen.

Once logged in, you'll be able to set up the email addresses you can view from your BlackBerry. Once you set one up, go back to the dashboard screen, where you can click on the options for your email address (it's the leftmost button below):

You can find your dashboard by carrier below:

Alltel: http://www.alltel.blackberry.com/
AT&T: http://bis.na.blackberry.com/html?brand=mycingular
Sprint: https://bis.na.blackberry.com/html?brand=nextel
Rogers: https://bis.na.blackberry.com/html?brand=rogers
Telus: https://bis.na.blackberry.com/html?brand=telus
T-Mobile: https://my.t-mobile.com/Login/Default.aspx
Verizon: https://bis.na.blackberry.com/html?brand=vzw

Once you click on the options, you'll come to a screen with information on your email address and passwords. That's where your auto signature box will be. Change or delete it, and then hit "Save."

Yep, that's all it is to it. You're done!

Amazon to open a retail store?

The online retailer was granted a patent today for a building design that looks like a mini-store location. I've always thought it would be kind of nice to be able to go to an Amazon retail (or distribution center) and pick up my orders without having to wait for shipping. There have been a few occasions where Amazon had the cheapest price, but my impatience won the battle and I ended up paying more just so I can play with my shiny new product the same day. Maybe in the near future when these things popup I can get the great Amazon pricing and the convenience of a local retail store.

Of course there is a con. With a retail location in your state, you can probably expect to pay taxes (if you are not already doing so) on  your purchases. That is something I could deal with, as Amazon prices are usually still cheaper even with taxes added on.

For a mini-store location like the one in question, Amazon could probably stock them with only the most popular products that are probably not too bulky in size. This could also work as place of pickup for any product you order through Amazon where you could save a little bit on shipping costs. Check out the article and patent drawings: http://www.techflash.com/Amazon_patents_design_for_what_looks_like_mini-storefront46087417.html

Microsoft Kumo and their other products

So Microsoft is probably going to reveal its new Kumo search at D: All Things Digital event next week. According to leaked screenshots from a couple months ago it seems to focus on a left hand navigation menu that breaks down searches into a number of related queries. (more info at CNET)

This seems like it may be interesting to see if Microsoft can cut into Google's search market share.  At the same time, I am thinking that Microsoft should probably concentrate more on  brand new and unique products. It probably won't take much of an effort for Google or even Yahoo to mimic and improve upon what Kumo will offer. With the market share of Internet Explorer slipping (while Firefox and Safari grow), the market share of Windows Mobile slipping (while BlackBerry and iPhone sales grow), the many available popular open source office suites (not to mention Apple's iWork suite) , and the popularity of the Mac platform among college students, Microsoft seems to be under attack on all fronts.

If Microsoft were to tackle an industry in its infancy (or one not yet dominated), I feel they could solidify their name in at least one more sector while making sure their current market share with their existing products holds steady or grows. Although there are a number of people who would love to see Microsoft fall off the face of the earth, a better result would be a reinvented and more agile Microsoft that we would all love to hate.

10 Mac Shortcuts a Newbie Must Know - Part 2 of 2

Now on to more shortcuts. Here is the link if you happened to miss 10 Mac Shortcuts a Newbie Must Know - Part 1

#5-  Show or hide the Dock

  • Use: Option-Command-D

This is shortcut perfect when a window is a bit to large, want to take a large screenshot, or just want the dock out of sight temporarily. It's just so smooth and quick!

#4 - Take A Screenshot (technically referred to as "Screen Capture")

  • Use ONE OF THESE SHORTCUTS:

  • Shift-Command-3 Capture the screen to a file
Shift-Control-Command-3 Capture the screen to the Clipboard
    Shift-Command-4 Capture a selection to a file
Shift-Control-Command-4 Capture a selection to the Clipboard

Boy, was I grateful to learn this trick when I did. I just couldn't figure out for anything how to take a screenshot on my Mac. Luckily, it's simple. The thing is, that there are multiple shortcuts, because there are multiple ways you may want your screenshot to be saved.

#3 - Close a Window

  • Use: Command-W

Want to close any window quicker?  Simply use "Command-W" and it's done. It is just so much faster than clicking the "X" in the corner.

#2 - Close all Windows

  • Use: Option-Command-W

Do you have too many windows open on your Mac?  Not a problem, just Use "Option-Command-W" and close them all at once.

#1 - Save

  • Use : Command-S

This has to be the number one shortcut for one reason.  How helpful would your Mac be if it couldn't save anything. So to save your work in an active window in an application simply press Command-S and your work is saved.

That's it guys! More shortcuts in the future, but for now...Chao!

Top 10 iPhone Questions Answered - Part 1 of 2

Custom iPhone Signature - SimpleLeap.com

You have the iPhone and you love it (or hate, that happens too). You just have a few questions here and there and need answers. Well... I have been lurking through forums and groups and even went through some of my replies to our users emails and have come up with a few of the most common questions regarding the iPhone.

#10 - How do you delete something when there is no delete button?

This is my favorite question for two reasons: because it's asked often and it's super simple.

Simply go the list item you are trying to delete (a list item within an app, your email, etc.) and swipe from left to right. A pulsing, red "Delete" button should appear. Tap and your item is deleted.

#9 - I can't close the original window in Safari, does this mean that it is constantly running?

No. This is how it works and since it's not updating a new page in the background constantly it is not running nor draining your battery.

#8 -  How do I save images from web pages on my iPhone?

When you find an image that you want to save, simply tap and hold the image. A prompt will pop-up asking if you would like to save the image. This MAY not be the same on iPhone 3.0 ;)

#7 - iTunes is erasing my applications when I sync, what can I do?

  1. Make sure you are logged into iTunes on your computer before connecting.

  2. DO NOT "Auto Sync".

  3. Connect and choose "Transfer purchased content" from the file menu.

#6 - Why can't I get my email on my iPhone without opening the actual Mail app?

Because you haven't changed your settings to do so silly! Simply:

  1. Tap on "Settings" from your iPhone home screen

  2. Tap on "Mail, Contacts, Calendar"

  3. Tap "Fetch New Data"

  4. Change from Manually, to your preferred setting.

That's it for now grasshoppers! Until Friday for now.

10 Mac Shortcuts a Newbie Must Know - Part 1 of 2

You went down to the Apple Store, browsed around, and ended up coming home with a brand new shiny, great running Mac.

You've played with iPhoto for about an hour take all of the silly photos you could, you've changed your Mac background color about 20 times and now it's time to get to business. Let's learn how to get you going on the Mac with speed, using shortcuts.

There are so many shortcuts and so little time to go through them all (not really but we will assume this for post sake, lol). So let's go through a list that will be easy for to remember and are essential to have your whizing through your Mac days.

Key:

(Command key)
(Option key)

#10 - Copy or Duplicate to clipboard

  • Use: Command-C

If you've used a Windows PC before and have used this shortcut, this should be very familiar. Want to copy some text, image, anything to the clipboard, just select your content you wish to copy and press Command-C .

#9 - Paste the contents of the clipboard

  • Use : Command-V

There's no Copy without paste, and Command-V (again very similar to Windows) allows you to paste the contents you have copied.

#8 -  Show or hide the Dock

  • Use: Option-Command-D

This is shortcut perfect when you have a enlarge a window a bit to large, want to take a large screenshot, or just want the dock out of sight temporarily.

#7 -  Undo

  • Use: Command-Z

So you didn't mean to type that sentence, you didn't want to move that box, or paste that particular content. No worries, it's not permanent, just undo this with Command-Z.

#6 -  Redo

  • Use: Shift-Command-Z

Wait a minute, you did mean to paste that item or type that sentence, now make your mind, just kidding. All it takes is a simple redo with Shift-Command-Z.

Ok, enough for today, the shortcuts will continue Thursday.

Palm Pre-Should RIM or Apple worry?

With reports of the Palm Pre launch just around the corner, it's only natural to wonder how it will hold up against the existing competition.

Since the iPhone's arrival many devices have tried (and failed) to challenge the iPhone's mass consumer appeal, hype, and sleek aesthetics, but the Palm Pre appears to have a better chance at making its presence known. The user interface powered by the new Palm webOS as well as the clean and simple styling of the device may have captured the attention of many who would consider or own an iPhone, but the sheer strength of Apple and its AppStore (not to mention the huge subscriber base of AT&T) probably won't slow the iPhone train anytime soon.

[caption id="attachment_53" align="aligncenter" width="384" caption="Palm Pre"]Palm Pre[/caption]

On the other side of the battle is RIM and their powerful BlackBerry brand. Although RIM has made pushes into the general consumer space with devices like the Storm and the launch of the AppWorld marketplace, their bread and butter still lies in the hands of business consumers, a sector the iPhone has not penetrated as easily. This however is an area where Palm has a strong history, and where RIM has grown at Palm's expense.

The difference this time around is that consumers (thanks to the iPhone) are demanding a better user experience from the first time the phone is booted up, to the animations of message alerts. And from early demonstrations the Pre appears to handle this rather well, while the user interface on BlackBerry devices is beginning to show its age. This could be an area of concern for RIM since Palm has less convincing to do in the business world than the iPhone. If priced right, executed successfully, and an introduction to an additional carrier besides Sprint is achieved, the BlackBerry lineup may be caught flat-footed against the Pre with no apparent plans of a UI overhaul anytime soon.

In RIM's favor, they are not sitting idle in the UI department, but with a new iPhone guaranteed to hit shelves soon, and the Palm Pre a few weeks away it's hard not to believe they'll be playing catch up.

How-To: Delete Applications from your BlackBerry

You've been downloading all of these cool apps to your BlackBerry and you stumbled across a few apps that just didn't quite fit your needs. It's ok, because you can remove them and it's easy to do.

  1. From your home screen, click on the "Options" button.

  2. From the list select "Advanced Options".

  3. From this list select, "Applications".

  4. Note: Wait for your list to load (it may take a moment based on the the quantity and how large your apps are on your BlackBerry). At this point I also advise using your BlackBerry Desktop Manager to back-up any of your data, including the app you may deleting .

  5. When you application list finally loads, browse the list and select which application you would like to delete.

  6. When you find the application you would like to delete, hover and from the BlackBerry menu, select "Delete".

  7. Confirm that you would like to delete the application by selecting "Delete".

  8. Once you confirm, again, it may take a few seconds to delete ( you will see the loading indicator while this is going).

  9. Once the BlackBerry is done deleting the app, it will prompt you to "Restart Now". Only do this if you plan on not deleting any more apps this session, as the process becomes very slow to delete and restart after the deletion of each application.

Your are officially done deleting your first BlackBerry application after the restart. Congrats, now go and install more, lol!

FYI...for the iPhone Users, I have already written a post about deleting apps from your iPhone if you need it ... How-To: Delete iPhone Apps .

Perfect time for an Apple video game console?

There is no question that Apple has made a push into the gaming world with the iPhone and iPod Touch. The power of the devices coupled with the solid AppStore platform brought the gaming world to iPhone owners everywhere. This got me thinking that an Apple video game console would be an excellent fit into their lineup.

A goldmine is resting in the living rooms of consumers around the world for Apple. An AppleTV like device that not only gives you access to music, movies and streaming video via the iTunes store but also a game-focused AppStore where consumers can purchase, download and play games right on their sofa could be the must have device(if priced right) for any kid, teen, tween, or adult out there.

This could  also open the doors for developers to reach an even wider audience who haven't yet jumped on the smartphone bandwagon, but enjoy playing games from time to time, as well as the hardcore gamers who live and die by their Xbox, Wii, or PS3 game consoles.

From a business standpoint, Apple would have the opportunity to not only compete with Microsoft on another front(against their Xbox), but also with Amazon and Netflix with their streaming services...all from one device. With big names like EA and Sega already developing iPhone games,  support from game developers already exists  on the Mac platform possibly even attracting more big name developers.

With the economy stabalizing, the current game console generation going flat in about a year or so, and the hype behind everything iPhone, I really think Apple has a golden opportunity to make a giant footprint in yet another industry.

I'm not the type to wait in line for a product, but something like this may have me camped out at a Best Buy. :)

How-To: Transfer Music from an iPod to Another Computer

iPhone/iPod Music Transfer to Mac - SimpleLeap.com

So I received a question via private message on FaceBook regarding transferring music from an iPod to another computer and thought it would be a great opportunity to answer this question on the blog, since I assume other people may have the same question. So let's get to it...

The Question:
How can I transfer my music from my iPod to another computer? For some reason or another, my laptop crashed. I'm trying get my music onto my desktop...Do you know how?

The Answer:

Luckily, this is not an issue and is simple to do!  Plus, this is exactly what your iPod was made for (besides playing music). There are various solutions, but I have detailed the FREE solutions. Because quite frankly everyone likes free, right? Anywho...

Manual Transfer: (FREE and not dependant on third-party software)

What you will need:

  • iTunes 7.0+

  • iPod/iPod Touch (apparently)

  • A computer that can run iTunes 7.0+

  • Sync/Charge cord (white cord that charges your iPhone or iPod)

Instructions:

  1. Make sure to install iTunes 7.0+ on the computer you wish to transfer your music.

  2. Open iTunes on your computer and if this is your first time opening iTunes on this computer, make sure to run through the "iTunes Setup Assistant" first.

  3. Connect your iPod or iPod Touch to your computer.

  4. Note: If you already have music installed on this computer, MAKE SURE you perform a backup, BUT DO NOT allow iTunes to "Auto-Sync" or "Associate this computer with your iPod ". This will delete the music you have already in iTunes which you should consider your hard copy.

  5. Now it's time to actually copy the files:

On a PC:

  • If your iPod was automatically detected, click on "iPod" (will appear in your "My Computer" folder).

  • You should now see a folder within your iPod.

  • Drag this folder over to your "My Music" folder on your PC hard drive. This will take a while as it is transferring your music to your desktop.

  • Note: If your PC does not detect or show the folder, unhide the files.

  • To unhide the files go to Tools -> Folder Options -> View, and then check (enable) the option "Show hidden files and folders."

On a Mac:

  • Click on "iPod" (will appear on your desktop once your iPod is connected).

  • You should now see a folder within your iPod.

  • Drag the iTunes folder from the iPod to the "Music" folder.

Note: The above "Mac" directions are for those who have older versions of iTunes and/or iPod. Currently with our iPhone, we simply connected the iPhone with the sync cord and the Mac detected it. Once the iPhone was detected it showed a list of songs and all you have to do is check which songs you would like to transfer. So apparently iPhone/iPod transfer to Mac is much easier!

Now just open iTunes and BAM it's there!

Also note, that this technique works to transfer your movies and video as well.

Secondary Method: Automated Rip (FREE and Paid ,  dependent on third-party app. Best for iPhone to PC transfer. EASIEST METHOD!)

This method will automated the entire thing for you. Simply download a third-party app and let them do the dirty work for you.

Ok guys that's all I have, until next time! If you have any questions or suggestions for another blog post, simply enter it in the comments below.

10 Neat BlackBerry Email Tricks - Part 3 of 3

Ok. This is the final BlackBerry Email Tip posting of the series. If you happened to miss any of the others please reference : 10 Neat BlackBerry Email Tips Part 1 and 10 Neat BlackBerry Email Tricks Part 2.

Now on to the remaining three tips:

#3 - Reply and Forward your emails quicker

Again, don't use your BlackBerry menu, use a shortcut. Just hover over the email you wish to reply to or forward and press "R" and "F" respectively.

#2 - Want to keep your messages on your BlackBerry longer or shorter than 30 days? Modify your options.

That's right, you can change this and so many people just didn't notice the option. All you have to do is:

  1. From your BlackBerry menu, select "Options"

  2. Select "General Options"

  3. Scroll until you see "Keep Messages"

  4. Select the days you want to keep your messages.

  5. Press the back button.

  6. Select "S" or "Save" to keep the changes made.

#1 - Delete multiple email messages at once.

Yes, I saved this for last, because this is honestly my favorite tip of all. When I started using my BlackBerry, I just wish I would have known this tip.

Instead of deleting your BlackBerry email messages one by one, you can simply open your BlackBerry email composer and from the message list hold the caplocks button (has arrow and aA) and scroll with the trackball all the way down the list to delete whichever emails you want.

Now, beware...this will delete all of the emails that are in a row, you can not skip down the list with this trick.

That's it guys, that's all I have. Well not really but more will come soon. If you guys have any cool email tricks, leave them in the comments and I will post them.

Quick-Tip: How to Change your iPhone Email Signature

Custom iPhone Signature - SimpleLeap.com

Your "Sent from my iPhone" email signature not saying enough to your contacts? Change it!

Use your signature change as the perfect opportunity to remind your contact about your company, remind them where you are, make them aware of your Twitter account, etc. Anything you would like to add in your signature (within characters or less, ) you can add in your iPhone signature.

So how do you do it, get on with it already? Ok, ok!

  1. From your iPhone or iPod Home screen, tap "Settings"

  2. Mail Settings iPhone - SimpleLeap.comScroll down and tap on "Mail, Contacts, Calendars"

  3. Mail Settings iPhone - SimpleLeap.comScroll down again until you find "Signature" and tap on it to change your signature.

  4. iPhone Signature - SimpleLeap.comThe iPhone keyboard will pop-up and will be pre-filled with the words "Sent from my iPhone". You can change this signature to whatever you would like.

  5. Custom iPhone Signature - SimpleLeap.comOnce you have changed the signature, simply press the "Mail" arrow at the top of screen pointed backwards and your signature will be instantly saved.

That's it! To check your work (like all of your Math teachers so often reminded you to do) simply draft an email from the phone and it should appear at the bottom of your email. If you don't like how it appears, repeat the steps and format as you would like it to display.

That's all for now, chao!

10 Neat BlackBerry Email Tricks - Part 2 of 3

And...we're back. This is the second part of a two part series, if you missed part 1, read this:  10 Neat BlackBerry Email Tricks - Part  1 of 3

Now on to part two:

#6 - When drafting an email, the space bar is your friend

Don't you hate the redundant task of entering an the "@" symbol and the "." when entering an email address.

Well, don't do it, just use spacebar. That's right, anytime you are entering an email, enter "email (spacebar) serviceprovider (spacebar) com " and it will return email@serviceprovider.com . It's that simple!

#5 - Speaking of entering emails...

Do you often email the same contact. Make sure to save that email address in your address book. This will allow for quick email address entry when you email that contact next time.

All you have to do is hover over your contact's email address within the email, and from the BlackBerry menu select " Add to Address Book". Once they are added in your address book, you will be able to type the first letter or two of their email address and it will automatically pull up when you compose an email next time.

#4 - Scanning your emails has never been this quick.

Besides using the previously mentioned "B" and "T" shortcuts to scan your emails, press the "Space bar" to move down one screen and the "Shift + Space bar" to move up one screen.

Well that's all I have for now, until Friday for part 3 my BlackBerry friends. Chao!

Quick-Tip: Quicker Caplocking on the iPhone and iPod

iPhone caplocked - SimpleLeap.com

When I first got the iPhone I was amazed at it's simplicity. "Wow" I thought. "Almost everything works as it should" . Well, even though that is not so much the case anymore, the caplock feature falls into this category and I didn't realize it until later.

As soon as I discovered that I didn't have to press the caplocks button each and everytime I wanted a letter caplocked, I quite frankly felt, well....silly ;)  and even a little upset that I didn't realize this earlier, lol. How much time could I have saved if I would have simply used one of the two easy caplocking methods that exsist.

So to spare anyone else the "sillset" moment (a horrible attempt at merging the word silly and upset ) , I give you the two simple caplocking methods.

For a Quick Fix:

  1. Simply hold down shift (the "UP" arrow on the left of the keyboard) as you type. Even though I found this a little difficult to do as I typed anything near the shift button.

Which is why I prefer the next method...

Change your settings:

  1. From your iPhone Home screen, tap "Settings".

  2. iphonesettingsScroll down and tap on "General"

  3. iphonegeneralsettings - SimpleLeap.comScroll down on this screen and tap on "Keyboard"

  4. iphonekeyboardsettingsTap on "Enable Cap Lock"

  5. Press the "Home" button (the large button at the bottom on your iPhone) to return to your home.

Now test out your caplocks settings by double tapping the caplocks button and typing multiple letters.

See, I told you it would work!

Chao until next time my iPhone buddies! Also, if you have any questions, how-to's, or tips you would like me to cover, just leave a comment and let me know. We are here to help!

10 Neat BlackBerry Email Tricks - Part 1 of 3

The BlackBerry is most notably known for it's exquisite handling of emails, and in my opinion it has earned it. There are so many little things you might not have known about that may help you send off your emails faster or simply may help you organize your email system better, so I have decided to post a few BlackBerry email tricks and tips in a three part series.

Let's begin...

#10 - Compose an email with one button

There are so many things that you don't want to use your BlackBerry menu for and composing an email is one of them.

It so much quicker to simply press "C" from your message list and start drafting your email auto-magically!

# 9 - Move to and from the next day in one touch

To read your emails by the day, don't scroll in one long list of emails, view them by day.

From your message list simply press the letter "N " to move forward one day and "P" to view the previous day messages and viewing your emails by the day will become a snap.

# 8 - Move back and forth between emails

This is my favorite shortcut because after I learned it, it shaved so much time off of the daunting tasks of checking my emails.

While reading an email message simply press "P" to read the previous email or "N" to read the next email.  It's so much better than closing the email and returning to the list to simply move to the next email.

Note: This tip is different from #9. Moving day to day is from your message list and moving to and from the next email is while your are reading an email.

# 7 - Instantly move to the top or bottom of your list of emails

Yes, the BlackBerry trackball is quick...but when reading a long email, it's simply not effective. Try this out for change:

Press "T" to instantly move to the top of an email or "B" to move to the bottom of an email.

That's it for now. Part 2...Coming Wednesday!

  1. Make sure you have a BlackBerry device that is capable of receiving a wireless connection.

  2. From your BlackBerry home screen, click on your Wi-Fi shortcut icon.

  3. From the Wi-Fi intro screen, click next.

Quick-Tip: Rearrange your iPhone Icons

You've download so many applications on your iPhone or iPod Touch, you have various home screen shortcuts and it is getting pretty cluttered on your home screen. What to do? Some rearrangement should help organize things, let's discuss some iPhone icon rearrangement shall we.

Of course the iPhone is just extremely simple to use, so this is just another thing that takes very little time to understand. Follow the wonderfully short steps below (which are almost identical to the directions for deleting iPhone apps) and you will be well on your way to an organized iPhone/iPod home screen.

  1. iPhone Delete App - SimpleLeap.comFrom your iPhone home screen, press down on any icon until you see the icons start to shake.

  2. Once you see the icons shaking, drag the icon you would like to move in the place you want it to be. Make sure if you want to move an icon to another screen, to drag it "off the screen", it will then move to the next page.

  3. You can move as many icons around as you would like when your iPhone or iPod is in this state.

  4. Once you have moved all of the icons to their place, simply click on the iPhone/iPod "Home" button (the big round button at the bottom of the phone) and the icons will stop shaking.

That's it, you've done it. You have helped your iPhone help you. You've organized the tool that keeps you organized (ok, I'm done).

Btw...a little tip:

Try to group applications and shortcuts with similar functions on the same pages, for instance, group all of your business iPhone apps on the same page, the apps that help you study in school on the same page, your personal apps on the same page, etc.

Chao for now!

BlackBerry How-To: Turn on Javascript on BlackBerry

Ok, so you visit all of these cool websites  on your BlackBerry and you get to your favorite website and what happens...nothing, that's the problem or maybe even a funky little error alert reminding you that your phone does not support Javascript.

Well you are totally in luck, because most likely your BlackBerry DOES SUPPORT JAVASCRIPT, you just have to know how to turn it on, sounds too simple right, well it is.

Before I get into the miraculously easy process of turning on JavaScript support on your BlackBerry (and trust me, it is sooo simple), let me remind you why you may want it. It's simply because websites are cooler and even function with it on, no really they actually work on your phone this way. Luckily, this problem should not arise often as many of your favorite websites have developed  miniature versions of their own websites to fit comfortably on your little handheld device. This tip is for the sites who have simply not got on the ship yet (including SimpleLeap and don't ask why, lol).

Ok, enough of the blabber and on to the directions...

Temporary Fix (will override existing browser settings)

  1. From your BlackBerry home screen, open your BlackBerry browser (remember, there are other choices beyond the installed BlackBerry browser for your BlackBerry surfing needs, but this works in your BlackBerry browser).

  2. Once your BlackBerry browser is open visit a webpage and  press the letter "J".

To Always have Javascript enabled (Warning: May slow down your browsing)

  1. From your BlackBerry home screen, open your BlackBerry browser.

  2. Press the BlackBerry menu button.

  3. Click on "Options".

  4. Select "Browser Configuration".

  5. Select "Support Javascript".

  6. Press the BlackBerry back button.

  7. Save the changes.

That's it, it's that simple. You can now view webpages with Javascript on them, now you know.

Adios!

How-To: Delete Apps from the iPhone

Downloading iPhone and iPod Touch apps are one of my favorite things to do on my iPhone device, but when I simply don't appreciate an application's greatness (that's the nice way of putting it right, lol) I want to usually get it off of my iPhone as soon as possible.

This is where your appreciation of the iPhone's ease of use comes to play. It is so great to know that not only is it easy to download and install third-party applications to your iPhone, but you can remove them just as quickly and easily as well.

  1. iPhone Delete App - SimpleLeap.comFrom your iPhone home screen, press down on any icon until you see the icons start to shake.

  2. iPhone Delete App - SimpleLeap.comOnce you see the icons shaking, the icons that you are able to delete will be denoted with an "x" in the corner.

  3. Tap on the application you wish to delete.

  4. iPhone Delete App 1 - SimpleLeap.comOnce you have tapped on the application, a prompt will appear asking if you are sure you would like to delete the application. Tap on "Delete".

  5. After you have tapped "Delete" the application icon should disappear instantly and should be removed from your device permanently.

  6. You can repeat these steps to remove other applications or simply press the " Home Button" (the big main button located at the bottom of your iPhone) to return the applications to their original state.

Tips:

  1. To ensure this application doesn't reappear on your iPhone when you sync your device with your desktop, make sure the application is removed in your list of applications within iTunes also

  2. As a backup for your paid iPhone applications you may want to keep the application in  iTunes and  change the settings in iTunes to allow you not to sync all applications, only the applciations you want to save.

  3. This method also works to remove the shortcut icons you create on your iPhone.

Now go and delete away.

10 Things You Must Do with your New BlackBerry - Part 3

This is the last part of this three part series. If you missed the first two, view them here: Part 1 and Part 2. Now let's keep it moving.

#4 -Send messages using your pin number.

You can send messages directly to a BlackBerry user's PIN rather than to the user's email address.  This is best for getting customer support directly from your service provider or contacting others when you have no direct connection aka( no wireless or data connection).

  3. In the "To" field enter the user's pin number you wish to send a PIN message

  4. Compose your message, and send it as usually would send an email message.

#3 - Maintain your BlackBerry battery life.

There are lots of ways to save your BlackBerry battery life, but you must know an important few to save your battery life for those crucial Cram moments or that important phone call to your clients.

  1. Minimize your use of third-party applications.

  2. Adjust your backlight settings.

  3. Adjust your connection settings.

  4. Adjust your notification settings.

#2 - Update your BlackBerry software.

For newbies this to me seems like one of the most complicated things to learn in the entire BlackBerry realm, but don't fret I have provided the link to detailed directions on BlackBerry's website on how to update your software after a general explanation on the 'why'.

There are many reasons to keep update software on your BlackBerry, the most important is simply to have access to the all of the recently added features that BlackBerry releases. With every releases comes bug fixes, feature updates, and more. If you are having any weird, unexplained issues with your BlackBerry, typically an update can resolve this as well.

Now for the detailed directions provided by BlackBerry themselves...

# 1 - Learn your Shortcuts.

So many BlackBerry shortcuts, so little time. There are few that I favor most, because of how much time they have saved me.

  1. Alt + BlackBerry Back Button = quick menu to applications on your phone

  2. T = takes you to the first email message in your mailbox

  3. B = takes you to the last email message in your mailbox

  4. N = Move to the next date in your email mailbox

  5. P = Move to the previous date in your email mailbox

  6. Open an email message and press T = takes you to the top of an email message

  7. Open an email message and press B = takes you to the bottom of an email message

  8. Alt + Shift + H = Help screen

  9. Alt+ Right Shift + Del = Soft Reset

  10. Space = to replace the "@" and "." in an email address

Ok. That is it. We have gone through the basics of BlackBerry. Any questions or suggestions, leave them in the comments.

Chao!

How-To: Create Shortcuts on your iPhone & iPod Touch

Do you have any favorite websites that you frequent on your iPhone or iPod Touch? Would you like some way to visit them quickly, with a touch of a button? Then you must know how to create home screen shortcuts on your iPhone. Bookmarking your favorite websites using home screen shortcut buttons can truly save you time. Best of all, it is extremely simple to do. The only thing that will stop you from bookmarking all of your favorite websites is the limit of icons you can have on your iPhone or iPod Touch. Luckily it is a really high limit and not many people will even get close to maxing out.

Let's see how this works...

1. From your iPhone or iPod Touch home screen, tap on the Safari icon to get on the Internet.

iPhone Internet Screen -SimpleLeap.com

2. Once you have accessed the Internet, visit any of your favorite websites and press the "+" on the bottom bar.

Add to Home Screen - SimpleLeap.com

3. After you have tapped the "+" button, a menu will pop-up with three options, tap "Add to Home Screen" to create the bookmark.

Add Name - SimpleLeap.com

4. You will be prompted to add a name to the shortcut, this most likely will be prefilled with the website title, but you can rename this to a title that you prefer.

5. Tap on "Add" at the top of the screen.

Shortcut Icon - SimpleLeap.com

6. This will instantly create an icon that represents your favorite website on your home screen.

See, as simple as APPLE pie (ok that was bad), but it was.

To access this website later, simply click on the icon as you do with any other application on your iPhone or iPod Touch and you will be directed to your website instantly.

Until later, Chao!

10 Things You Must Do with your New BlackBerry - Part 2

So...on to part two shall we. Just in case you missed part one... 10 Things you Must Do with your New BlackBerry - Part 1

#7 - Download some apps

Well of course we would say this, we make lots of neat apps for your BlackBerry . No really besides that , apps honestly make the device more useful. There are tons of apps for the BlackBerry, that might literally fit your every need. Here at SimpleLeap, besides our own apps, we have our favorites. I have listed below a few app suggestions and places where you can find loads of third-party BlackBerry applications in one place.

If you have never installed third party applications for your BlackBerry, please read the How-To on Downloading Third Party BlackBerry Apps. Also remember if there is a trial available (and there almost  always is, USE IT)

Personal Productivity BlackBerry Apps:

  • Viigo - RSS/Blog Feed (Patrick's favorite -  he likes his news on the go, but he warns to not pull so much it can make the BlackBerry slow)

  • Appetite - Grocery list and recipe manager

  • Pandora - Radio for your BlackBerry

  • BlackPing - Post your status to Ping.fm which post your status to each your social network

Student BlackBerry Apps:

  • Student Docket - Student assignment/schedule planner

  • Cram - Study and flashcard tool-in-one

  • MSDict- Dictionary (kinda self explanatory)

Business BlackBerry Apps:

  • eOffice - Document manager for your BlackBerry

  • TalkLater - Call Reminder Utility

  • Call Client - Phone call manager, lets you make phone calls back to back and mark notes for each call (for hardcore roadies, salesmen, and phone addicts)

Places to Download Third-Party Apps:

Always try to REMEMBER to download from the developer's site if you can, this is typically best for everyone.

  • Mobihand - large selection, organized

  • GetJar - huge selection, a little to huge...this should keep you busy for awhile

  • Handango - it's a source, nothing to scream about

  • Handmark - limited selection

  • ClickApps - very limited selection

  • CNET - alot of the top apps (just because it's the top app, means nothing)

  • BlackBerry App World - new, slow, decent selection

  • BerryStore - better to for free apps (SOMETIMES you get what you pay for, NOT ALL THE TIME)

#6 - Rearrange your home screen icons

This is a great idea after you have installed all of those great apps, the icons will be scattered everywhere on your home screen and nobody wants a cluttered screen. We did purchase the BlackBerry to help us become organized, not because of that nice looking screen or cool app right ;)

So here is how to rearrange your home screen icons:

  1. From your BlackBerry home screen (the full screen, not the short list of five icons on the side) hover over the icon you wish to relocate

  2. Press the BlackBerry menu button

  3. Select Move from the list

  4. Use your BlackBerry trackball to move the icon where you would like it be

  5. Press the BlackBerry trackball in to place it there.

#5 - Personalize your BlackBerry

Ok. You now have cool apps, in the place you want them... how about that boring, so unlike you BlackBerry background or how about those ringtones.

Easy problem to solve. Download some themes and ringtones silly. They are easy to find and usually in the same place as the third-party apps (reference the list above).

I have listed the theme we have on BlackBerries and some other sources to find more.

So long...until next time...Part 3 (Coming to you on Monday!)

How-To: Update Your iPhone Software

There are several reasons besides being the 'cool kid in school' to keep your iPhone software updated. The first and most important in my opinion is to save your iPhone's battery life. Apple suggests that their engineers are always working on ways to optimize the battery life of your iPhone and the performance enhancements are installed with the software update.

Another reason is to help ensure that your applications run at optimal performance. You may want to perform a iPhone software update when you find that alot of your favorite iPhone applications lag at one time or another.  To resolve this annoying lag issue, it helps to update both the actual iPhone applications and your iPhone software on your device.

It is so simple to update your iPhone software. All you need in order to perform the update is your iPhone, the sync/charge cable that your phone came with,  and a computer that runs iTunes 7.7 (or higher). Please make sure before you update that you version of iTunes is up to date itself (iTunes reminds you when to update and it does it OFTEN, too often IMHO).

iPhone Update Screen - SimpleLeap.com

  1. Connect your iPhone to your computer running iTunes 7.7+using your sync/charge cable that came with your iPhone.

  2. Open iTunes on your computer.

  3. Select iPhone in the Source List (the list on the left side of the screen).

  4. In the Summary panel, click "Check for Updates" to see if there's a new version of the iPhone software available.

  5. Click on "Update" and this will install the latest version of the iPhone software onto your device.

How To: 5 Ways to Save Battery Life on your iPhone

Isn't it always the case that when you have to make that important phone call , send that amazing photo, or have an emergency Cram session that your battery life is low. Well in this iPhone How-To, we are going to show you a few ways to save that oh so crucial battery life.

Follow along, you will love us for it.

1. Minimize your use of third-party apps.

That's right. Those awesome iPhone apps that you download do drain your battery. The good news is as long as you minimize your use of third-party apps you should be fine. Also remember, all iPhone apps aren't equal. There are just some apps , particularly games or apps that utilize vibration or GPS within the app, that can run your battery down.

2. Only pull one email account.

Add Email Account on iPhone

Instead of retrieving your email from multiple accounts, try pulling only one or two email accounts. It just takes more battery power to do it. Try setting up your multiple email accounts and feeding it into one account, this way you are only pulling one account on your phone.

3. Turn down your screen.

Adjust Brightness on iPhone

It's that simple, turn it down. Simply go to your iPhone Settings --> Brightness , and lower the brightness of your screen. It's that easy.

4. Turn off GPS.

Adjust Location Services/GPS Settings

On your iPhone, go to Settings--> General --> and use the slider to turn off "Location Services" aka GPS.

5.  Turn off your iPhone WiFi.

Adjust Wireless Settings on iPhone

Again, on your iPhone, go to Settings--> Wi-Fi--> and use the slider to turn off "Wi-Fi".

That's it, start saving your battery power.

How To: Download 3rd Party BlackBerry Applications

To download most third-party applications for use on BlackBerry devices, there are two standard methods for downloading. We have included directions for each method, as we hope this helps in downloading your future BlackBerry applications.

Download Directly to Phone:

The “Download to Phone” is also referred to as an OTA (Over the Air) download. Alot of software companies use this terminology when providing access to their applications for download directly to your device.

The OTA’s allow you to directly download applications from a particular website, in the case of downloading SimpleLeap applications our website ( www.simpleleap.com ), directly from your BlackBerry browser. This is usually the easiest and quickest way to perform an installation, because it does not require the BlackBerry Desktop Manager software. If you try to click on this download from a regular desktop browser, it will not work, it will most time only display a scrambled set of numbers or information about the download.

To Perform the Download to Phone:

1. Visit the provided link for the particular OTA software download.

For Example: To download Appetite for BlackBerry : http://www.simpleleap.com/downloadOta.htm?app=appetite from your BlackBerry browser.

2. Once you have done this, it will prompt you to begin your download and will ask you if will allow the software certain permissions, say yes (if you would like to).

3. It will begin to download and ask you to reboot your phone to finalize installation.

________________________________________________________________________________________________

Download to Desktop:

This method requires the use of the BlackBerry Desktop Manager (this came as a CD with your device or you can download here: http://na.blackberry.com/eng/services/desktop/ ) to your desktop. This will allow you from your desktop browser to click on the “Download to Desktop” and unzip the file to connect your BlackBerry and add the file that way. This method will not work through your BlackBerry browser (on your phone).

1. Download the Desktop Files for the BlackBerry application you wish to download.
2. Unzip the files.
3. Launch the BlackBerry Desktop Manager.
4. Connect your BlackBerry with the USB that was supplied with your device to your desktop.
5. Within the BlackBerry Desktop Manager, click on “Add/Update Applications“.
6. Select “Add Applications” which should be located on your left.
7. You will now see a list of applications that are installed on your phone, click on the “Browse” button.
8. Navigate to the directory where you unzipped the downloaded zip file (for this example we will use Appetite).
9. Select “Appetite.alx” or any other case an “.alx” file.
10. Press “Next“.
11. Press “Finish” and it will install.

SimpleLeap Software Releases Recipe and Grocery List Manager Appetite, for the BlackBerry

Atlanta, Georgia - November 13, 2008 - SimpleLeap Software, LLC today announced the release of their new recipe and grocery list manager tool Appetite for BlackBerry mobile devices. Appetite is a meal planning manager that helps the user quickly maintain all of their family recipes and shopping lists on-the-go, using their phone. Appetite has both the full functionality and features of any cookbook or grocery list tool, but together Appetite users can get new recipes on their way home from work, get all the items need to prepare a new meal, and keep the recipe in one, safe place for later reference. Appetite has also given household cooks the power to organize maintain multiple grocery lists by store, send their grocery lists to friends and family, create their recipes and/or grocery lists on their phone or online, and download new recipes from their friends, family, and even some of their favorite chefs and cooking magazines, websites, and blogs.

Appetite’s recipe manager layout resembles one of a traditional cookbook with lots of smart features tossed in. Not only can you add or view a recipe’s photo, entire ingredient list, and step-by-step cooking instructions, but Appetite makes it simple to get a recipe’s total cost, a rating from other users, and the ability to automatically receive shared recipes from friends and family. “Appetite’s recipe manager is exactly what you would want out of your standard cookbook.” says Ashli Norton, Co-Founder of SimpleLeap Software, ” The power to browse recipes in categorized lists on the go, set your own recipe settings, and only cook recipes that you know will be awesome, based on user ratings, makes the recipe manager an incredibly invaluable stand-alone tool, but it’s pairing with a grocery list is simply ingenious.”

One-touch grocery item checkoff, grocery list creation from a recipe, and a shopping list calculator are just some of the features that put Appetite’s grocery list manager in a league of it’s own. But Appetite’s load of pre-installed grocery items, separate grocery list per store, and item organization by aisle, keep your grocery trips quick and streamlined. “Making something that was smart and simple enough for the everyday user was our inspiration when developing Appetite, ” says Patrick Chukwura, CEO/Co-Founder of SimpleLeap Software, “It wasn’t enough for us to pack tons of features into Appetite, our vision was something that we ourselves would like to use during our rush through the grocery store aisles. The last thing we felt the user needed was something that would take up anymore time than the ‘infamous’ handwritten shopping list or even something that forced us to alter our existing shopping habits. Appetite was made to be one of those tools that fit your lifestyle, and we believe it is just that.”

Device & System Requirements

Appetite requires a handheld device running BlackBerry OS 4.2 or later. Appetite can be downloaded over-the-air (OTA) directly to your phone at http://www.simpleleap.com/downloadOta.htm?app=appetite . Users must use BlackBerry Desktop software when not performing an over-the-air (OTA) installation and download Appetite from http://www.simpleleap.com/appetite.htm . Cram BlackBerry - Great Review from CrackBerry

SimpleLeap Software received a wonderful review for Cram on CrackBerry.com. We would like to thank CrackBerry for recognizing our software. Read the CrackBerry review below... Cram Cram is a handy little app that lets you create, import and study for tests on the go. With it you can review anything on the go from materials on an upcoming test to vocabulary, trivia and more. The interface is clean and easy-to use. You can also use it to track results of your tests to keep a running history...and a log is also kept detailing which answers you got incorrect, and how you answered. This could prove to be an invaluable tool for anyone 'cramming' for exams... But don't get caught peeking at it during test time.
